In 2013 the festival played host to the newly rising Alt-J, Chet Faker, Jessie Ware, Japandroids and Nicolas Jaar, alongside slots from established internationals Bat For Lashes, Divine Fits and El-P. But it was Sydney producer Flume who proved the surprise breakout, pulling enormous crowds across the nation.

2013 was also the year the festival debuted on US soil, with the event taking place at Meadow Brook fields at Detroit’s Oakland University. Having established the Laneway brand at international showcases like SXSW and Field Day London, organisers embraced the opportunity to partner with Palace Sports & Entertainment and Paradigm Agency to be the first Australian festival to migrate to North America.
Matthew Lazarus Hall (Laneway co-promoter): "With the US industry already talking about Laneway as one of the best in Australia, it was a huge thrill for us to take it to Detroit and American audiences.”
Danny Rogers (Laneway co-founder): “Initially we weren’t sure about Detroit. Jerome and I flew there and they showed us around and we thought ‘This town is so amazing.’ Immediately we felt a pull towards the people and what was going on there. The next minute we’re programming these incredible bands on this amazing site and it was on. It’s one of the best festivals I’ve ever been involved with.”
