With fans relishing the lush new sites in Melbourne and Sydney and the 2010 line-up having underlined Laneway’s tastemaker status, the festival expanded once more - to Singapore. Despite torrential rain on the day of the event, the festival was immediately embraced.
Danny Rogers (Laneway co-founder): “When the idea of taking the festival to Singapore was first floated, I thought, ‘Are you kidding me?’ But Singapore is now our biggest show. For the first one we had to do a big press conference - they flew in 40 people from all over Asia to talk about the launch. We had torrential rain throughout the whole show, like nothing I’d ever seen. But everyone was so happy we were doing it. People had travelled from all over the place, the bands loved it and the punters loved it. The people there that first year felt really proud, like they’d witnessed a really special moment. Suddenly we were away.”
Michael Chugg (Laneway co-promoter): "When we moved into Singapore, people thought we were crazy, but we believed the audience was there and hungry for it. We brought in The Temper Trap for the launch and they nailed it. We all stood there when the gates opened and we knew we'd made it happen, and then it pissed down with rain for the next three hours. But it didn't dampen peoples’ spirits, the fans loved it and the headline in the paper the next day called it ;Rainway; and a huge success."
In 2011 the New Zealand leg of the event also shifted, from the Britomart Quarter to Aotea Square. Now an international festival in location as well as content, word had spread far and wide — not just through media and fans, but the bands themselves.
