Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane

With the expansion to Sydney deemed a success, and the line-up growing to include more international artists, the team looked to Brisbane.

Danny Rogers (Laneway co-founder): “A friend in Brisbane rang and said, ‘Your idea is so good that someone’s going to try and do the same thing up here.’ I called a friend at [Brisbane venue] The Zoo and suggested that we do something in that back lane there. They were like, ‘Fuck yeah.’

Meanwhile, the Sydney event (now in its second year) was already on its way to becoming an institution.

Michael Chugg (Laneway co-promoter): “2007 was tinged with sadness for me, as the festival was on the day of Billy Thorpe’s memorial service. [Chugg was a friend and one-time manager of Thorpe.]  But it warmed my heart to have both events on the same day - to celebrate the life of a dear friend and one of Australian music’s greats, whilst watching a new chapter in our music history unfold and being a part of it.”
