We were first introduced to the amazing work of the Yiriman Project by Linda Bosidis, wife of our dear friend, the late Dean Turner.

The rates of suicide in the Kimberly region of WA (one in 1200) in comparison to other indigenous populations around the country (e.g. one in 100,000 in NSW) are, frankly, shocking. Kimberley Land Council CEO Nolan Hunter said “The youth suicide epidemic in the Kimberley is a national emergency. Our young people are dying at disproportionate rates. This must be stopped. We cannot allow it to go on and risk losing an entire generation of young people.”

That's why The Dean Turner Project and Laneway are proud to continue their support of the Yiriman Project. Managed by the Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre [KALACC] the Yiriman project was conceived and developed by Elders. It supports young Aboriginal people facing issues of self-harm and substance abuse by reconnecting them with their cultural roots. Yiriman has been shortlisted as one of three finalists in the Reconciliation Australia Indigenous Governance Awards, the winner will be announced in Melbourne on 12 October. There will be more info on Laneway's involvement and how you can support the work of this essential organisation in the coming months.
